You know what, those are excellent questions and I don't know the answer to a one of them. When I was a kid, I always said "tooths" instead of "teeth", which made my mom crazy, and also "mooses" and "deers."

None of it makes a lick of sense. (Why a lick? I do not know).

You bet! The English language is quite complex and a lot of times, hard to comprehend. I don't know where they come up with that but if I may add to your questions, why is a pineapple neither a pine or an apple? Weird isn't it?

Great idea for a TT this week! And I hope someone from Webster or Oxford will be able to answer our questions.

Happy Thursday!

The English language still has to learn we don't take a siesta, we "sleep" a siesta :)

You've asked questions that have baffled English speaking children for years. Here's another - why do you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?

Robin stole my answer! Park on a driveway and all that. ;)

Yeah, great questions! Languages don't have a lot of logic in them... :-)
Thanks for visiting my TT!

It's all part of a plot to keep non-native speakers (as well as small children) on their toes.

Why "on their toes," by the way? There are more weird things about English than you can shake a stick at--an expression that has been puzzling me for some time, because, clearly, you can shake a stick at quite a lot of things. LOL

Haha! A person never really thinks of these stupid rules of language! Thank you for making me think about it! :)

I blame it on the "melting pot"! So many cultures all coming together to confuse each other in one place! Call it America! And then tell me please.... why is it COOL to be HOT!?

English is a torturous language to learn. Not easy at all.

Pookie looks so confident in her pose! Such a sweetie! D :)

I've asked myself these same questions and the answer is "don't ask." It's a funny language, changing all the time. Blog is now in the dictionary.

Ah, an interesting question. The answer may lie in the fact that English derived from another language. The biggest influences on the English language are German and French. English is in fact a Germanic language but for a time, French was the language of England and many of their words mixed with the English words... Sorry, the subject is too in depth and complicated for me to do it justice. I encourage everyone to do some research and learn some of the words that were inflenced by other languages.

They're not all English... don't blame us. A few of those are exclusively American (Eggplant and Filling Out a form... we fill it in in the UK).

Perhaps you can do one for other European oddness in language soon too as you are so good at so many languages!

We're in the middle of cat acquisition - hopefully should be the proud 'owners' of a giant ginger tom cat next week... Fingers crossed (explain why we cross our fingers for luck if you will...?)

I love these questions! We are a strange lot, aren't we! :)

Check out my TT.

Why isn't it scissor instead of scissors? When you gets more than one beer, why isn't it beers? This English language is most confusing, even to us cats!

PHew! I'm having a hard time trying to comment on your blogs. First neither Internet Explorer or Firefox would let me comment, the comment window was so narrow that I couldn't see what to write and not fill in the blog address either. Then right now suddenly I can comment via Internet Explorer... STill problem with Firefox which is the browser I normally use.
Maybe it's some of the add-ons that I have installed in my browsers that made the problems. One of them I have on both browsers. We'll see if it keep making problems.

Or maybe it's Blogger that's having these problems with random users. It has happened similar things before.

Those are some very good questions, there really are a bunch of them. I wonder if anyone acatually can answer them? *s*
